NEW CASTLE COUNTY POLICE MOUNTED PATROL

The New Castle County Police Mounted Patrol Unit is a fully operational specialized unit which operates 12 months a year in all areas of New Castle County, Delaware.  This elite group of officers and horses patrol high crime neighborhoods on a daily basis, addressing all issues, such as illegal drug activity, robberies, burglaries, prostitution, quality of life complaints, as well as traffic concerns.  It is not unusual to see officers running radar off of their horses and making traffic stops on residential roads or making arrests of violators in communities.  The horses draw the public to them and quite often are a catalyst to a positve working relationship between the community and the police.

The Mounted Unit also performs countless demonstrations for churches, schools, community events and the like.  They assist in terrain searches for missing subjects as well as suspects who have fled police.

Another function the unit serves is in a crowd control or riot situation.  These horses are highly trained in moving large disorderly crowds to instill a sense of order, without having to use force or causing injury to anyone.  Studies have shown that one mounted officer provides the same ability as 10 ground officers in a crowd control situation.  The New Castle County Police has all draft and draft cross horses which maximizes the intimidation factor when addressing disorderly crowds. The uniqueness of these horses is their ability operate fearlessly in the face of disorder and violence, and yet they are some of the gentlest horses, remaining passive and quiet as small children pet them
